Fact text

  • Snellville was named after Thomas Snell, a teenager who secretly plotted to run away from London to Georgia, only to get caught by his parents before he could leave.
  • The town's co-founder, James Sawyer, sailed to America at 17, returned to England at 21 to collect his inheritance, then promptly came back to Georgia to open a store.
  • Snell and Sawyer printed their own store currency with Snell's face on it, like their own personal cash, a common small-town trick of the era.
  • The original Snell and Sawyer's Store was so cleverly upgraded that Sawyer built granite walls around the old wood frame, then dismantled the wood from the inside out.
