Fact text

  • The city is literally named after a racehorse owner, Marion Willis Savage renamed the town after himself once his famous horse Dan Patch made him a celebrity.
  • Dan Patch was so fast he set the world pacing mile record in 1906 at 1 minute 55 seconds, a record that stood unbroken for 54 years.
  • Believe it or not, Savage was once a shipbuilding port: Cargill built 18 Navy oil carriers and 4 tugboats here during WWII, dredging 14 miles of the Minnesota River to make it happen.
  • The town was originally called Hamilton, named after Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, by an Irish immigrant who apparently really missed his old neighborhood.
