Fact text

  • New River was originally a stagecoach stop back in 1868, long before anyone worried about HOA rules.
  • The town's name comes from a seasonal wash that only flows part of the year, so the "river" in New River is basically optional.
  • For years, New River marked the end of the pavement on the old Black Canyon Highway, beyond here, it was dirt road all the way to Prescott.
  • Gavilan Peak got its name in the 1880s and means both "sparrow hawk" in Spanish AND "hawk" in Apache, a rare bilingual mountain.
  • As recently as 2018, many residents had their water literally hauled in by truck from Phoenix fire hydrants.
