- Zukor's estate attracted such a lively artist colony that composer Kurt Weill and actor John Houseman ended up as his neighbors on South Mountain Road.
- The town's name has a charmingly optimistic origin: founding fathers literally called it 'New City' because they envisioned building a brand-new city there.
- Dutch Gardens, built in 1934, features whimsical brick carvings of Popeye and the Old Dutch Cleanser maid alongside windmills and mountains.
