Fact text

  • Murrysville's hillside tree sign, planted by Boy Scouts in 1933, was so big it landed in Ripley's Believe It Or Not in 1947 as the world's largest sign made of trees.
  • The 'Y' in that famous tree sign is said to point directly toward the site of the historic Haymaker natural gas well, a very extra way to mark local history.
  • In 1878, Murrysville was home to the nation's first commercial natural gas well, which at one point was also the largest commercial gas well in the entire world.
  • Before a pipeline was finally attached in 1883, the Haymaker well was casually venting about 35 million cubic feet of natural gas into the air every single day for five years.
