Fact text

  • The village once had its own airport named after James Fitzmaurice, one of the first pilots ever to fly a plane east-to-west across the Atlantic Ocean.
  • A whopping 100,000 people showed up to the dedication of that local airfield on tiny Spruce Street, quite the party for a 1.6-square-mile village.
  • Several dozen Sears Roebuck kit houses, basically IKEA homes from the 1920s, were built here, including some of the largest models Sears ever offered.
  • Thanks to its large Jewish and Italian communities, locals affectionately nicknamed the village "Matzo-Pizza Park."
  • The area between Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road is filled almost entirely with Irish street names, a nod to the developers who described their project as having "a bit of Old Erin."
