Fact text

  • La Mirada literally means 'the look' in Spanish, a surprisingly glamorous name for a suburban city on the L.A.-Orange County border.
  • The city was originally founded by Andrew McNally of Rand McNally fame, the map company that helped generations of Americans figure out where they were going.
  • McNally built an olive oil processing plant here in the 1880s and shipped his premium olive oil all across the United States.
  • In the early 1950s, La Mirada was hyped as 'the Nation's completely planned city', futuristic enough to earn praise at the State Fair.
  • The city was actually incorporated under the name 'Mirada Hills' in 1960, and voters had to officially rename it to La Mirada later that same year.
