Fact text

  • Harundale Mall, built in 1958, was the first enclosed shopping mall east of the Mississippi River, and one of the first places ever called a 'mall.'
  • The town's name changed at least five times before a postmaster finally decided in 1930 that 'Glen Burnie' sounded better as two words.
  • The original planned mall site was rejected because the intersection flooded so badly that cars would end up door-deep in water during ordinary rainstorms.
  • The Harundale Mall was developed by James Rouse, the same visionary who later built the entire planned city of Columbia, Maryland nearby.
