- A single pond behind the local post office became ground zero for a national invasive-species panic when over a thousand snakehead fish were discovered there in 2002.
- The snakehead discovery was so dramatic it inspired three separate movies, including the Syfy classics *Snakehead Terror* and *Frankenfish*, plus a National Geographic documentary called *Fishzilla*.
- The town's name was carefully chosen to sound pleasant and English, it's borrowed from a tiny township in Cumberland, England, originally called 'Croft-town.'
- Crofton launched the same year as the famous planned community Reston, Virginia, essentially making them twin towns born in spring 1964.
