MetLife, Inc. is a leading global provider of insurance, annuities and employee benefit programs, serving 90 million customers. It has been in business since 1868 and is the largest insurance companies in the U.S. with $688 billion in total assets (as of year-end 2018). MetLife offers fixed annuities (immediate and deferred) only through employee benefits programs (such as defined contribution benefits plans). Annuities issued to individuals were transferred to Brighthouse Financial Inc., a separate entity no longer affiliated with MetLife, although annuities issued by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and Metropolitan Tower Life Insurance Company remained with MetLife. MetLife has very strong ratings from the most widely followed rating agencies: A+ (A.M. Best), AA- (Fitch), Aa3 (Moody’s) and AA- (Standard & Poors). Brighthouse Financial’s ratings are a “notch” below MetLife’s: A (A.M. Best), A (Fitch), A3 (Moody’s) and A+ (Standard and Poor’s). For 2018, Brighthouse Financial was ranked #15 in annuity sales in the U.S.
